Moriac Day Run 13th May 2007

Well the weather gods were kind to us for the last run of the season. Mid May can be a touch cold and wet, and we had run a few drought busting events earlier in the year.

However it was fine, warmish and dry when we set off from Alan’s place at Moriac. We went more or less south on pretty empty roads – we did strike a few of the dreaded racing cyclists that seem to infest this part of the world, but we avoided the massed packs that have been a feature of some of our runs down here. There were plenty of officials standing on corners, so I guess they were out there in big numbers, but our timing was spot on and we saw only a few stragglers.

If my memory serves me we came out onto the coast somewhere near Anglesea and enjoyed a sedate blast down this lovely bit of road. It was early enough that the normal madhouse traffic hadn’t started yet, so it was all very pleasant. A short stop for a regroup at a roadside car park about half way to Lorne saw an attempt to wire the 27 AJS overhead valve side plates together fail, so it was on to the trailer for it while Catrina found an empty pillion seat to occupy for the rest of the ride.

At Lorne we were scheduled to turn and go up and over the hill to Dean’s Marsh, but there are major road works happening at the intersection in question. One day these works might be finished and make turning right up the hill a whole lot safer, but that day they just made things so dangerous that we rode on to the other side of town. We regrouped at the wharf and then rode back thru Lorne with a nice easy left turn up the hill and onto one of the nicest motorcycling roads around the area. It is hard to beat a winding road through native forest, with almost no traffic and nice views when you have time to look. And at the end of it a regroup at Dean’s Marsh for coffee and cake.

Then it was back to Alan’s for a cook your own meat BBQ lunch with salads, tea, coffee and biscuits provided. Many stories recounted and lies were told before the bikes were packed back on trailers and everyone headed home after a great day’s ride. Many thanks to the organisers and their helpers for a great day.
